Alexander Bernhard Kölpin (born August 31, 1739 in Garz / Rügen ; † November 18, 1801 in Stettin ) was a German doctor and botanist .

Life

Born on Rügen, Kölpin moved to Greifswald with his parents in 1742 . There he attended the council school and from 1755 studied theology at the University of Greifswald . He moved to the University of Göttingen , but had to return home soon after because of the occupation by French troops in the Seven Years' War . He preached a few times in Greifswald churches, but because of his poor health ("chest weakness" and "coughing up blood"), which made it impossible for him to work as a theologian, he switched to studying medicine. He studied in Berlin and Greifswald and was awarded a Dr. med. doctorate, was director of the Greifswald botanical garden from 1765 and from 1767 also adjunct of the Greifswald medical faculty. In 1771 he went to Stettin as a district physician and professor at the academic high school .

Kölpin corresponded with Carl von Linné and published a German translation of Pehr Löfling's botanical travelogue in 1766 .

He was the lodge master of the Szczecin Masonic lodge "To the three golden anchors".
