Alexander Breslow

Alexander Breslow (born 1928 in New York City , † July 20, 1980 in Washington, DC ) was an American pathologist . He was a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant melanoma .

Life

Breslow was born in New York City. He studied medicine at the University of Chicago and then worked as an assistant doctor with the United States Public Health Service in Baltimore . This was followed by a job as a clinical assistant at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland . Breslow then completed a residency in pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston . In 1959 he became an instructor in pathology at the University of Washington at Seattle . He moved to the George Washington Medical Center , where he was full professor and subsequently director of the Department of Anatomical Pathology in 1974.

Breslow was married and had three daughters. He died of cancer in 1980 at the age of 52.

Breslow was a member of the International Academy of Pathology and the American Association of Pathologists . He was a member of the World Health Organization's International Melanoma Working Group , the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the College of American Pathologists and the Washington Society of Pathologists . The latter he served as a temporary president.

Breslow published in 1970 a work on a histological classification system to assess the stages of malignant melanoma and the prognosis derived from them. This classification is named after him as tumor thickness according to Breslow or Breslow level .
