Alexander Chancellor

Alexander Chancellor CBE ( January 4, 1940 - January 28, 2017 ) was a British journalist and editor .

Chancellor studied at Eton College and Trinity Hall in Cambridge . He first worked for the Knowledge Encylopedia , which was edited by his brother. After his marriage in 1964, started working for the Reuters news agency . He worked first in Paris, then in London and finally as an office manager in Rome. A brief employment at ITN followed . When his friend Henry Keswick bought The Spectator magazine , he offered Chancellor the position of editor, which he held from 1975 to 1984. During his time as editor, he was responsible for the modernization and success of the Spectator. He then became the editor of Time and Tide magazine until it was discontinued in 1986. He served as associate editor of the Sunday Telegraph and also founded the magazine of the Sunday Telegraph. He was the US editor for the Independent after it was founded from 1986 to 1988 and was the editor of The Independent magazine when it was founded in 1988. He worked for a year in New York as a columnist for The New Yorker . He wrote a book about this time in America called Some Times in America . Starting in 1996, Chancellor wrote for the Guardian's weekend supplement before returning to the Spectator as a columnist in 2012. In 2014, following the resignation of Richard Ingrams , he took over the position of editor of The Oldie magazine , which he had already helped to found in 1991.

In 2012, Chancellor was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire . He is the father of British model Cecilia Chancellor and the grandson of John Chancellor . He had two daughters with his wife Susanna and a daughter from an extramarital relationship with journalist and author Emily Bearn .
