Alexander Eduard Magnus von Grotenhielm (also Grotenhjelm ; * May 24, 1831 , † 1899 ) was a Russian lieutenant general .

Military career

Alexander Eduard v. G. served in the midshipman corps in Saint Petersburg from 1842 and took up his service as midshipman in the Black Sea Fleet in 1848 . In 1850, promoted to ensign , he joined the land forces and was deployed in the defense of Sevastopol , where he suffered two wounds. In 1872 he was a member of the 2nd Orenburg Battalion and was promoted to colonel in 1873 . He led his battalion in the Turkmen campaign . In 1877 he became head of the Amu-Darya department , in this capacity he exercised control over Khanate Khiva . His promotion to major general took place in 1883. He was then brigade commander in the European part of Russia, in 1890 he was commander of the Ukrainian city of Ochakiv . Ultimately he was promoted to lieutenant general in 1893 and retired from active service in 1894.

Origin and family

His father was the Russian colonel Alexander Gottlieb von Grotenhielm (* 1790), who was married to Charlotte von Nasackin (1797–1872). His uncle, his father's brother, was the Russian cavalry general Magnus Johann von Grotenhielm (1789–1867). Alexander married Amalie Lehmann, they had no offspring.
