Magnus Johann von Grotenhielm (also Grotenhjelm , Russian : Максим Максимович Гротенгельм; * May 8, 1789 in Weißenstein Estonia ; † November 19, 1867 in Wiesbaden ) was a Russian lieutenant general and came from the German-Baltic family of officers "from Grotenhielm ".

Life and military career

From 1806 to 1808 he studied military science at the University of Dorpat , since 1807 he was a volunteer in the Livonian militia and then in 1808 he joined the Imperial Russian Army . His first military service was in the Russo-Turkish War between 1809 and 1811. As a hussar officer, he took part in the Russian campaigns from 1812 to 1814. In 1814 he was promoted to captain and was deployed with his unit in France . In 1813 he became an orderly officer in the II Corps . In 1824 he was lieutenant colonel and commander of the Kiev Dragoon - Regiment , 1826 was promoted to colonel . As commander of the Kievan Dragoon Regiment, he was used in the Russo-Turkish War from 1828 to 1829 . 1830-1831 it was used in the Polish uprising . In 1834 he became a major general promoted and commanded the 2nd Brigade of the 6th Cavalry - Division . From 1843 to 1846 he served in the Caucasian Corps, he commanded the Chechen and Dagestani units and fought in the Caucasus War . In 1847 he took over the 2nd Uhlan Division, which he commanded in the Hungarian campaign , while being promoted to lieutenant general . In 1849 he became the commander of a reserve division and took part in the Hungarian campaign. He led the 3rd Light Cavalry Division as commander from 1850 to 1856. At the end of his career he was commander of the troops in Odessa and between the Dnieper and Berezanski estuaries. In 1856 he was appointed general of the cavalry .

Origin and family

Magnus Johann v. G. came from the German-Baltic noble family Grotenhielm. His father was the Russian major and mayor of Saint Petersburg Magnus Christoph von Grotenhielm, his mother was Anna Eleonora, née Grotenhielm. Magnus Johann married Vera Manstein, but had no descendants. His nephew Alexander Eduard von Grotenhielm (1831-1899) was also a Russian lieutenant general. Magnus Johann died on November 19, 1867 and was buried in the Russian cemetery in Wiesbaden.
