Count Alexander Ivanovich Rumjanzew ( Russian Александр Иванович Румянцев , scientific transliteration Aleksandr Ivanovič Rumjancev ; * 1680 ; † March 15, 1749 ) was a general in the Russian army .

Life

Rumyantsev joined the Preobrazhensky Guard Regiment in 1704 and rose quickly through the favor of Peter the Great . He became commander in chief of the army in Persia in 1722 and then went to Constantinople as ambassador . In 1732 he was banished to Kazan by Empress Anna for wasteful administration of the crown income and in 1735 he was governor there.

He fought against the Turks under Burkhard Christoph von Münnich and concluded the Peace of Åbo on August 7, 1743 , for which he was raised to the rank of count by the Empress Elisabeth .

In 1720 he married Countess Maria Matwejewa, granddaughter and heir of the statesman and reformer Artamon Sergejewitsch Matwejew (1625-1682). The son from this marriage was Field Marshal Pyotr Alexandrowitsch Rumjanzew-Sadunaiski (1725-1796).
