Alexander Magnus Malmqvist (born March 29, 1796 in Ask, Skåne län ; † October 2, 1854 in Malmö ) was a Swedish history , portrait and miniature painter .

Life

Malmqvist was the son of the cantor Jens (or Jöns) Malmqvist from Ask. He first attended school in Landskrona and Lund and then studied at the art academy in Stockholm. In 1818 he exhibited Diana and Endymion and in 1819 Brage and Idun , for which he won a second prize from the “Götiska förbundet utlysta konsttäflingen”. Malmqvist was active in Lund around 1820 . In 1821 one of his works was again awarded. In 1822 he went to England , Italy and France , where he learned miniature painting. When he was stricken with a mental illness, he went back to his homeland in the 1830s and was cared for in a hospital in Malmö, but could not be cured and died there. He remained unmarried. A miniature self-portrait that he made during his illness came to the National Museum there.
