Alexander Maier, member of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg

Alexander Maier (born March 27, 1991 in Titisee-Neustadt ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ) and a member of the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg . He has lived in Göppingen since he was three .

education and profession

Alexander Maier went to primary school in Göppingen-Holzheim from 1997 to 2001 . For the next six years he was at the Hermann-Hesse-Realschule in Göppingen . He then completed his technical college entrance qualification and school education as an assistant for technical communication and documentation at the technical and media vocational college in Eislingen . In 2009, after graduating from school, he completed nine months of military service as a paramedic . After the general basic training in the Hohenberg barracks in Horb , he came to the main unit in the Ulm Bundeswehr hospital. Maier describes the work in the hospital as an “important experience”.

From 2011 to 2016 Alexander Maier worked for the Stuttgart radio station DIE NEUE 107.7 . After an internship and subsequent training as a businessman for audiovisual media, he was responsible for news, programming and reporting in the editorial team. For his work as an editor he won the media award of the State Institute for Communication (LFK) in 2015 in the category "Radio - Volunteers". In 2016 it was nominated again for the LFK Media Prize in the Radio - Current Information category.

Political activity

Alliance 90 / The Greens and Green Youth

Since 2009 he has been a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party and the youth organization Green Youth . He was co-founder and spokesman for the Green Youth in Göppingen from 2010. From 2013 to 2015 he was a member of the state board of the Green Youth in Baden-Württemberg.

Municipal council

In the 2014 local elections, Alexander Maier was elected to the Göppingen municipal council. He is a city councilor in the culture and sports committee, VHS committee, integration committee, house of youth committee, partnership committee, supervisory board of Business Park GmbH and on the supervisory board of the park renovation plant company.

Parliament

Before the state elections in Baden-Württemberg in 2016 , Maier ran against his party colleague and incumbent MP in the Göppingen state electoral district, Jörg Fritz . In the vote against Fritz there was a stalemate. Maier won by drawing lots and then won the direct mandate (first mandate) with 29.09% in the constituency for the Greens.

As a member of the state parliament, he is the spokesman for strategies against right-wing extremism in his group, deputy chairman of the Committee on Home Affairs, Digitization and Migration, member of the Committee on Europe and International Affairs and member of the Standing Committee.

District chair

Alexander Maier was elected district chairman in 2016 at a district members' meeting of the Greens Göppingen . In 2018 he was re-elected chairman, together with Fadime Ercik he forms the dual leadership of the district association.

Political positions

Fight against right

The fight against right-wing extremism was Alexander Maier's central theme in the state election campaign in 2016. He continues his long-standing commitment to right-wing extremism in his work as a spokesman for strategies against right-wing extremism in parliament.

Right-Wing Extremism Commission

Alexander Maier is a member of the right-wing extremism commission of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen . The commission sees itself as part of the movement against right-wing extremism and discrimination of all kinds. In the commission, strategies are jointly developed to combat right-wing ideology and racism. The right-wing extremism commission consists of federal and state parliament members as well as experts from science and civil society. It usually meets three times a year.

District of Göppingen Nazifree eV

Maier initiated and founded the association Kreis Göppingen nazifrei eV in 2012. The non-profit association represents a non-partisan alliance against right-wing extremism. There he was first chairman until 2016 and then moved into the second row as a normal member of the board.

EU Danube Region Strategy

The EU Danube Region Strategy is a strategy developed by the European Commission in 2011 to strengthen the Danube Region. Alexander Maier is the spokesman for the EU Danube Region Strategy in the Greens parliamentary group of Baden-Württemberg . The aim of the strategy is to strengthen the cross-border bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the actors in the Danube region in selected subject areas in order to advance the Danube region and thus also the EU through projects.
