Alexander Salmon about 1865

Alexander Salmon = Salomon (* November 1819 in London ; † August 6, 1866 in Papeete , Tahiti ) was a British merchant .

Life

Alexander Salmon grew up as the 6th of 12 siblings in a Jewish family in London . His father, John Salmon, came from France , had been a banker in Paris and had to flee from there during the French Revolution . His fruit business, which was then founded in London, went bankrupt in 1837. John Salmon later became a rabbi in Hastings .

Encouraged by an uncle, Alexander and his brother Julius emigrated to San Francisco, then still in Mexico, in 1839 and from there to Tahiti in 1841. There he became secretary of Queen Pomaré IV of Tahiti and fell in love with her 20-year-old adoptive sister Oehau (1821-1897), the leader of the local Teva tribe. The Queen agreed to the marriage in 1841, suspended the law that forbids a Tahitian woman from marrying a foreigner for three days, and gave Princess Oehau the title Ari'i Taimai.

Herman Melville , who met him on his stay in Tahiti in 1842/43, described him as follows: " Because his wife was related to the Queen, he became a permanent member of Her Majesty's household. This adventurer got up late in the morning, theatrically dressed in calico and jewelry. had a dictatorial tone in the conversation and was in apparently excellent relations with himself. We found him lying on a mat, smoking a pipe flute of tobacco, in the middle of an admiring circle of chiefs and ladies. He must have noticed our arrival, but took place to politely get up and greet us, he went on talking and smoking without even looking at us. "

In 1856 Alexander established a business partnership with the Scottish businessman John Brander, who was two years his senior . He married his 14-year-old daughter Titaua.
