Alexander Welitsch (born as Alexander Asgaruh January 15, 1906 in Skopje , Ottoman Empire ; died October 21, 1991 in Stuttgart ) was a German opera singer with a baritone voice .

Life

Alexander Asgaruh first studied in his home country and then went to the Hanover University of Music for further training . In 1936 Welitsch was accepted as the first baritone in the ensemble of the Stuttgart State Opera . In the 1941/42 season he sang at the Stadttheater Königsberg and from 1942 to 1944 at the Vienna Volksoper . After the end of the war he was engaged again in Stuttgart in 1946 and belonged to the State Opera ensemble until 1957, he was a guest of the house until 1963.

Welitsch gave guest appearances at the Vienna State Opera , at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and at the Teatro Liceu Barcelona, ​​at the Munich State Opera and at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino , at the San Francisco Opera, and at the Grand Opéra Paris . He has also been a guest in Barcelona, ​​Chicago, Naples, Rome and Rio de Janeiro.

His most important roles included Scarpia in Tosca , Golo in Pelléas et Mélisande by Debussy, Escamillo in Carmen , Danton in Danton's Death by Gottfried von Eine and the four demons in Hoffmann's tales . In 1950 he sang Don Juan in the world premiere of the opera Don Juan and Faust by Hermann Reutter in Stuttgart .

Welitsch also appeared as a concert and oratorio singer. He was married to the dramatic soprano Inge Borkh (1921–2018), with whom he also produced joint sound recordings. After completing his career, he lived with her on Lake Constance in Switzerland.
