Lermontow Museum

Thanks to the efforts of Alexander von Bilderling, the Lermontov Museum in Saint Petersburg opened its doors in December 1886 in the rooms of the “Nikolaus” cavalry academy, where Lermontov had been a student. Bilderling managed to collect 705 objects, including paintings, watercolors, drawings and writings, both from his possession and from correspondence with the writer during his service in the Caucasus.

This and that

General von Bilderling designed a model for a new infantry uniform with a helmet ( spiked hat ), which, however, was rejected by Tsar Nicholas II as unaesthetic. In 1906 von Bilderling organized an expedition to Central Asia with Baron Mannerheim , who later became Field Marshal and President of the Republic of Finland . Mannerheim had taken part in the Battle of Mukden with Alexander von Bilderling and was his former student at the Nikolaus Cavalry Academy. Von Bilderling was the German cousin of the scientist Michail Doliwo-Dobrowolski .
