Aleksandr Petrov ( Russian Александр Константинович Петров ., Scientific transliteration Aleksandr Petrov Konstantinović * 17th July 1957 in Pretschistoje , Rajon Pervomaisky, Yaroslavl Oblast , Soviet Union ) is a Russian animator and director of animated films.

Life

Petrov studied at the Yaroslavl Art School and at the WGIK Film Academy in Moscow . After that he was a student of Juri Norstein . In 1981 he started working on films and was temporarily active as an outfitter.

He made his debut as a director, screenwriter and producer in 1989 with the animated short film Die Kuh , which, based on a story by Andrei Platonow , is about a Russian boy who remembers the family's cow and its calf. The ten-minute film was nominated for an Oscar in 1990 and received an honorable mention at the Berlinale in the short film category. After the dream of a ridiculous person , the animated film The Mermaid followed , which earned him his second Oscar nomination in the category of Best Animated Short Film and was also shown at the Berlinale.

For the first large-screen animation film ever, The Old Man and the Sea , he won the Oscar and numerous other prizes, such as a Canadian Prix ​​Jutra and a nomination for a Genie Award for best animated short film . The 20-minute oil-on-glass short film based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway tells of an old fisherman who follows a fish at sea for days. Petrov had worked on the film from March 1997 to April 1999, which took over two years to draw the 29,000 drafts, and had received support from Japanese and Canadian producers.

Today he lives in Yaroslavl and works mainly on commercials, including for Coca-Cola and United Airlines . His last project was the anime film Winter Days (2003), in which he participated as an animator alongside Isao Takahata and Juri Norstein. At the 2008 Academy Awards he was nominated for the fourth time with Meine Liebe . In 2014 Petrov was awarded the Russian Platonov Prize .
