The Platonov Festival ( Russian международный Платоновский фестиваль искусств ) is an annual international cultural festival in Voronezh , Russia, dedicated to the writer Andrei Platonov .

Foundation and financing

The festival was founded in 2011 by the Voronezh Oblast Regional Government and the Voronezh City Council. It is financed from state funds by the Russian railway company Rossijskije schelesnyje dorogi and sponsors, which include not only Russian companies but also Siemens . The festival director has been the initiator of the event Mikhail Bychkov since it was founded, and has been the artistic director since 2015.

Street Theater (2014)

The Platonow Festival offers programs in the fields of literature, music, theater and visual arts. The cultural events - readings, music and theater performances and exhibitions - take place in various places and public places in Voronosh.

The festival has an international focus. In 2018 artists from 13 nations took part in the festival. The Swiss theater group Finzi Pasca , the British Wayne McGregor dance theater, the Bulgarian Stefan Kirow theater ensemble , the French ballet Preljocaj of the National Choreographic Center of Aix-en-Provence performed alongside the Berliner Ensemble and the Rimini Protokoll theater company . Rimini Protokoll initiated their theater project 100% for the first time under the name 100% Voronezh on a Russian stage. Julian Steckel , the Kronos Quartet and David Fray performed alongside DelaDap at the festival. Exhibitions were dedicated to the photographer Alexander Rodchenko and Fernand Léger .

At the same time as the 2018 festival, criticism of the programmatic orientation of the festival by the governor of the Voronezh region became known, who called for the increased involvement of regional artists and a classic program in favor of international participation. Russian artists and winners of the Platonov Prize wrote an open letter to support the continued existence of the festival in its current format.

In 2011 an exhibition of the photographic work Boris Ignatowitsch was shown. David Geringas , Juri Baschmet , Viktor Tretyakov , the Borodin Quartet and the Kremerata Baltica under Gidon Kremer gave concerts at the festival.

In 2012, in addition to literary readings, an open-air poetry took place with the participation of Russian poets. The Swiss music ensembles Chaarts and Casal Quartet gave concerts.

In 2013, Mischa Maisky , Boris Berezovsky , Julian Rachlin , the soloist ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic and the Russian National Orchestra performed . In addition to Russian theater groups, the French Compagnie des Petites Heures and the cabaret In der Bar zum Crocodil by German director Ralph Reichel with Teresa Weißbach and John R. Carlson were guests.

The 2014 motto was street theater . International dance ensembles, u. a. DEREVO part. Vadim Repin , Daniil Trifonow and Michail Pletnjow gave concerts.

In 2015 an exhibition showed works by the Russian painter Pawel Filonow . The Italian theater company Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione , the French puppeteer Philippe Genty , the British Gandini Juggling and the Swiss Cirkus Giroldon took part in the festival. The Russian poet Michail Eisenberg and the writer Alexei Varlamov gave readings.

In 2016 the Viennese Liquid Loft , the French Compagnie 111 by Aurélien Bory , the Israeli Incubator Theater Ensemble , the Norwegian Grusomhetens Teater and the Ensemble des Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord performed at the Platonow Festival. Barry Douglas , Benjamin Yusupov , Maxim Rysanov , Alexander Sitkowetski and the Camerata of the Concertgebouw Orchestra performed alongside the Kora instrumentalist Sekou Kouyate and the American guitarist Joe Driscoll .

In 2017 the Argentine Tango Metropolis dance company, the ensemble of the Hungarian Proton Theater , the Belarusian Brest Puppet Theater , the British Cheek by Jowl and the Nederlands Dans Theater were guests. The Norwegian ARVVAS , Sona Jobarteh from Gambia, the Japanese-French Maïa Barouh and the Icelandic musicians Hjaltalín performed alongside the German Vision String Quartet and Clara-Jumi Kang , the French Lucas Debargue and the Russian Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra under Vladimir Fedoseyev

Platonov Prize

The award, endowed with prize money, has been presented annually since 2011 to Russian cultural workers for outstanding achievements in literature, music, visual arts, theater and for innovations that are committed to humanistic and cultural tradition. The winners are selected by a jury made up of cultural representatives, members of public institutions and authorities of Voronezh Oblast.
