Proton Theater

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Proton Theater is an independent Hungarian theater company. It was founded in 2009 by the film and theater director Kornél Mundruczó and the theater producer Dóra Büki. The virtual group primarily develops, produces and supervises the director's independent productions.

history

Mundruczó has been working at the theater since 2003. During his career he developed a special working method, which he used in 2007 in his piece Frankenstein project at the Bárka Theater. With this performance, Proton Theater was founded in 2009. The piece then served as the starting point for his film Tender Son - The Frankenstein Project (2010). This acclaimed production led him to believe that he needed a basis on which to work freely and with his own group. The theater producer Dóra Büki developed the operational structure to secure a future for her ideas.

The aim of the Proton Theater is not only to maintain maximum artistic freedom, but also to ensure a professional framework for your freely produced performances and projects. Proton Theater productions are developed as international co-productions. Her permanent co-production partners include a. the Wiener Festwochen , Hebbel am Ufer (HAU), Hellerau and Trafó House of Contemporary Arts in Budapest. In addition to Mundruczó's productions - Das Eis (2006), Frankenstein Project (2007), It's Not Easy to Be a God (2010), Shame (2012), Dementia (2013), Winterreise (2015), and Scheinleben (2016) - she would like to give the members of the company space to realize their own ideas. With this in mind, the following productions have come about: Last (2014) directed by Roland Rába , 1 link (2015) by Gergely Bánki , and Vackor nyomában ( In the footsteps of Vackor , 2017) by János Szemenyei.

It is not easy to be a god was awarded the main prize at the Politics im Freie Theater festival in Dresden in November 2011 . For the Vienna Festival adapted 2012 novel Mundruczó the shame of JM Coetzee , in Hungarian: Szégyen , for the stage. The play later served as inspiration for Underdog . Schande , as well as Scheinleben from 2016, were nominated by Nachtkritik.de for the 50 most important productions of the respective years. For Scheinleben , Mundruczó was nominated for the German Theater Prize Der Faust in 2017 in the Drama Direction category. It was the first time in the history of the award that a non-German theater, in this case the Hungarian Proton Theater, was among the nominees.

The performances of the Proton Theater were shown at more than 100 festivals until 2018, from the Avignon Festival to the Adelaide Festival , the Singapore Arts Festival, the Bo: m Festival in Seoul and at the Zurich Theater Spektakel .
