occupation

Tender Son - The Frankenstein Project (Hungarian original title: Szelíd teremtés - A Frankenstein-terv ) is a Hungarian film drama directed by Kornél Mundruczó from 2010. The script is inspired by Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein . Kornél Mundruczó also appears as an actor in his film - he plays the role of director Viktór .

The film was screened at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2010 and was nominated for a Palme d' Or.

action

Director Viktór has invited numerous actors to a casting in an empty rented apartment. He is looking for a leading actor whom he can breathe life into through the camera (film quote).

In his first fade-in, Rudi gets out of a tram in front of a cemetery. He walks stiffly, buys a bouquet of flowers and drives on to his mother, but does not meet her. She is the landlady of the apartment in which Viktór is taking test photos. By chance, Rudi takes part in the casting. He is supposed to shoot a kissing scene with the extra Tünde, but refuses to give her several times. When Tünde provokes him, Rudi kills her. He escapes from the crime scene. It turns out that Tünde was his stepsister. Finally, mother and son meet. They haven't seen each other for a long time. However, the mother knows that he committed the murder and hides it.

Rudi meets Magda, who lives in her mother's apartment. She is the stepsister of his stepsister Tünde. Magda and Rudi become friends. She hides him in the attic of the house, locking him in. Viktór finds out that Rudi is his son - Magda also finds out. She knows that Rudi is a murderer.

The situation escalates when Rudi asks his mother to give him Magda as his wife. The mother complies with his wish. Later on, Rudi kills his mother's husband in the presence of Magda. Rudi then kills his mother when she tries to confront him. Viktór goes in search of his son. Together they drive into the mountains and suffer a car accident, in which Rudi is seriously injured. In the final scene, Viktór trudges through a snowy landscape. The fate of Magda remains unclear.

Family relationships

The family and family relationships of the protagonists only become clear in the course of the film. Rudi is the son of Viktór and the landlady. Her husband has a daughter from another marriage. This is Tünde that Rudi strangles. The man also has a stepdaughter - the daughter of a woman with whom he was previously in a relationship - that is Magda. Magda is Tünde's stepsister, who in turn is Rudi's stepsister.

criticism

The internet portal Kulturwoche.at comments: "The process of creating monsters in Tender Son - The Frankenstein Project does not take place in any laboratory of a scientist who is convinced of himself, but happens during a casting".

The television station Das Erste sums it up: " The Frankenstein Project is a completely unsentimental social drama". The ZDF commented, "Rudi's increasingly desperate attempts to be accepted by his parents lead straight into disaster."

The portal cinema.de sees deficiencies : “An increasingly predictable plot, characters without depth and a pale leading actor make it tough, pretentious and ultimately banal. Fade art cinema that is only visually impressive ”.

Awards

Director Kornél Mundruczó and cameraman Mátyás Erdély were honored for this production at the European Film Festival in Seville in 2010.
