Maya Sona Jobarteh (* 1983 in London ) is a musician , composer and actress and comes from a griot family from West Africa . She plays the West African instrument kora , a 21-string bridge harp, and occasionally guitar . She is one of the few women who are in the griot tradition, usually the tradition is passed on from father to son.

She is the granddaughter of the late griot Amadou Bansang Jobarteh and the cousin of the well-known kora player Toumani Diabaté . Her brother Tunde Jegede is also musically active. Jobarteh studied cello , piano and harpsichord at the Royal College of Music , composition at the Purcell School and African studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London .

Jobarteh was born and raised in London; she began to learn to play the kora at the age of three and she made her first public appearance at the age of four in London's Jazz Café . As a musician, she is a member of the Tunde Jegede Ensemble , with whom she has toured Great Britain , Ireland and parts of the Caribbean . She worked with composers Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin and Dónal Lunny on River of Sound with the Irish Chamber Orchestra with Evelyn Glennie . There was further collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , Britten Sinfonia , Milton Keynes City Orchestra and the Viva Chamber Orchestra . Since 1999 she worked in the band Ocacia .
