Alexandre Girardet
Alexandre Girardet (born May 22, 1767 in Le Locle , † June 15, 1836 in Neuchâtel ) was a Swiss etcher , draftsman and watercolorist .
Life
Alexandre Girardet was born as the son of the bookseller and publisher Samuel Girardet (1730-1807) and Marie-Anne Bourquin. He was the brother of Abraham Girardet , Abraham Louis Girardet and Charles Girardet . He married Catherine Guian or Guion.
Alexandre Girardet moved to his brother Abraham in Paris after 1783 and worked under his leadership. He signed his etchings A.-G. le jeune to distinguish them from the works of his brother. He also painted pictures in oils and watercolors. He illustrated a. a, the picture book La Suisse Romande .
In 1792 he returned to Neuchâtel with Abraham in Switzerland and was his successor as a drawing teacher in 1794 when his brother returned to Paris. Due to a mental illness, he had to give up teaching in 1801. Gradually he also gave up art. Thanks to their attention to detail and the precision of their reproduction, his works retain their significance as documents of their epoch.
