Alexandre de Riquer i Ynglada (born May 3, 1856 in Calaf, Comarca Anoia , † November 13, 1920 in Palma de Mallorca ) was a Catalan , graphic artist, draftsman, painter, bibliophile, writer and poet.

Life

Alexandre de Riquer spent his childhood in his family's estates near Calaf and attended the Jesuit College of Manresa from 1864 to 1867 . For a short time Riquer lived with his mother, from 1869 with his father, who lived in France as Carlist in exile, and attended the school of the Immaculate Conception in Béziers . During these two years he learned French. During this time he created his first paintings. Between 1873 and 1874 he studied, probably not enrolled, at the École des Beaux Arts in Toulouse , where he painted his first portraits. After the father's pardon, Alexandre de Riquer returned to Barcelona with him in April 1874 and continued his studies at the Escola de La Llotja art school . It was then that he began to study literature.

Because of the difficult economic situation of his family, Riquer had to work hard to earn a living. He entered the world of publishing around 1876 under the direction of his friend, writer and illustrator Apel·les Mestres i Oñós . He created posters and printed advertising material. In 1879 he traveled to Italy and visited Rome , Pisa , Florence , Genoa and Venice . On the return trip he visited Paris . Back in Barcelona, he started illustrating magazines such as “La Ilustració Catalana” and “Art i Lletres”. In 1881 he returned to Italy, where he joined the group of Spanish artists.

In 1885, Alexandre de Riquer married Dolors Palau Gonzalez de Quijano, daughter of a distinguished family. Between 1886 and 1898 the marriage had nine children, three of whom died early. The responsibility of such a large family spurred Alexandre de Riquer to devote himself to his work, especially after 1899, when his wife died. In the 1880s he worked as an illustrator for books and magazines.

At the Paris World's Fair of 1889 he saw the paintings of the English Pre-Raphaelites .

In 1893 he co-founded the artistic circle of Sant Lluc. During his first visit to London in 1894, he discovered the modern Art Nouveau art of posters. He was also impressed by the London collections of Japanese art.

Alexandre de Riquer remarried in 1911 Marguerite Laborde (1880-1973), a French writer who was known under the pseudonym Andrée Béarn . Together they traveled through Mallorca, Ibiza, Castile and Andalusia, and they had a son, Jean de Riquer (1912-1993), who became a painter and etcher. In 1917 he moved to Mallorca, where he painted many landscapes and where he died three years later.
