Alexei Iwanowitsch Butakow ( Russian Алексей Иванович Бутаков ; * 7 February July / 19 February  1816 greg. In Kronstadt ; † 28 June July / 10 July  1869 greg. In Schwalbach ) was a Russian admiral and explorer .

Through his research, which related to the area of ​​the Aral Sea between 1848 and 1849 , Butakov received an award for his extraordinary service. During this research trip, he made friends with Taras Shevchenko , who took part in the expedition as an artist. In 1850, the Russian Navy issued a map of the Aral Sea made by Butakov. From 1853 he devoted himself to the exploration of the Syr Darya River , which he sailed completely and partially up to Fort Perowski. In the 1850s he also investigated the Amudarya Delta , between 1858 and 1859 he deepened his studies in this area.

He was made internationally known through reports in English and German contemporary magazines, among others.
