Life

Starobinski is a student of Yakov Seldowitsch and studied with him at the Lomonossow University with a degree in 1972 and a doctorate in 1975 at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a senior scientist there. From 1990 to 1997 he headed the gravitation and cosmology department there. 1999 to 2003 he was the deputy director of the institute.

Starobinski dealt early in the 1970s with particle generation in cosmology and particle generation and radiation from rotating black holes (1973/74), a forerunner of Hawking radiation . He was also a pioneer in inflation (cosmology) on the Russian side in 1979 (in the west by Alan Guth around the same time).

In 1991 he was a visiting scholar at the École normal supérieure , in 2006 at the Institut Henri Poincaré , 1994/1994 and 2007 at the Yukawa Institute at the University of Kyoto and in 2000/2001 at the Research Center for the Early Universe at the University of Tokyo .

Starobinsky is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . In 1996 he received the AA Friedmann Prize from the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been co-editor of JETP Letters since 1991, of the International Journal of Modern Physics D since 1992, of Classical and Quantum Gravity from 1993 to 1996, and of General Relativity and Gravitation from 1989 to 1997.

In 2009 Starobinski and Vyacheslav Muchanov received the Tomalla Prize for his contributions to inflationary cosmology and especially the calculation of the spectrum of the gravitational radiation generated in the inflationary phase of the universe. In 2010 he received the Oskar Klein Medal . In the same year 2010 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 2012 Starobinski and Mukhanov were awarded the Amaldi Medal , and in 2013 the Gruber Prize for Cosmology . In 2014 Starobinski received the Kavli Prize in Astrophysics. He is an external member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and has been a member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2017 . For 2019 he received the Dirac Medal (ICTP) .
