Prince Alexei Michailowitsch Tscherkasski ( Russian Алексей Михайлович Черкасский, born September 28, 1680 , †  November 4, 1742 ) was the Russian Chancellor under Tsarina Elisabeth .

Life

Cherkassky was a member of the Russian nobility and was born in 1680 as a descendant of Prince Michael Cherkassky , who came from a Circassian princely family.

From 1702 Alexei Cherkassky served his father Prince Michael Cherkassky, who administered the Russian city of Tobolsk , for ten years . In 1714 Alexei Cherkassky became a member of the Urban Planning Committee in St. Petersburg .

In 1719, Cherkassky was appointed governor of Siberia by Peter I and in 1726 a member of the ruling senate . At the time of Anna Ivanovna's election as empress, Cherkassky was the richest landowner in Russia and, through the leadership of the boyars , who rebelled against the supreme council of state founded by Catherine I , had a significant influence on strengthening Anna Ivanovna's sole rule.

For his services to the king, Cherkassky was appointed minister and, in 1740, finally chancellor of Russia. During his time as minister, Cherkassky concluded a trade agreement with Great Britain in 1734 . As Chancellor of the Reich, he signed a peace agreement with Prussia on December 16, 1740 and a defensive alliance with Great Britain on April 3, 1741 .

With his second wife, Princess Maria Trubezkaja , Cherkassky had a daughter, Varvara, in 1714.
