Alexei Wladimirowitsch Gaskarow ( Russian Алексей Владимирович Гаскаров ; born June 18, 1985 in Zhukovsky , Moscow Oblast , Soviet Union ) is a public figure in Russia. He was a member of the Coordination Council of the Russian opposition and the People's Council of his hometown. He is actively campaigning against deforestation in Moscow Oblast.

Gaskarov graduated from the Finance University of the Government of the Russian Federation with a degree in mathematical methods in economics .

He worked at the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences , where he dealt with social citizen initiatives. He was part of a group of experts who achieved changes to the Labor and Housing Code. The most contentious points of the law on the monetization of special rights were deleted. In addition, Gaskarow developed proposals for changes in the area of ​​building law in the Zhukovsky area.

Until 2013 Gaskarow was project manager at the consulting company "Expert-Systems", where he dealt with market research and innovative start-up companies .

Political activity

Gaskarow has been politically active for about ten years.

From 2006 he supported and coordinated Russian social citizens' initiatives. In addition to successful amendments to the Labor and Housing Code, he also achieved a review of projects with cases of ecologically questionable production and cases of the controversial development of vacant lots in Russia.

In autumn 2012 Alexei Gaskarow was elected to the Coordinating Council of the Russian opposition. This is an online elected organ that unites the entire political spectrum of the Russian opposition.

At the end of March 2013, Gaskarov was elected to the People's Council in his hometown of Zhukovsky - the first independent body of civil self-government in recent Russian history.

As a citizen of the city of Zhukovsky, Gaskarow took part in protests against the deforestation of the Zagowski Forest. One of these actions was a citizen-organized tent camp. Gaskarow involved the People's Council and the regional newspaper of the city of Zhukovsky in the actions.

First arrest

On August 3, 2010 Gas Karow was for his part in protests against the deforestation of Khimki arrested -Walds. Then a campaign for the release of the "Khimki prisoners" started in Russia and abroad. A total of 30 protest actions took place in 27 cities in twelve countries on joint international days of action in September 2010 alone.

On October 15, 2010, the Moscow Oblast Supreme Court reversed its decision to arrest Alexei Gaskarov and released him. On June 24, 2011, the Khimki City Court finally acquitted him. This acquittal was later upheld by the Moscow Oblast Supreme Court. On April 27, a regional court in the city of Tver Gaskarov even awarded 50,000 rubles in damages because it ruled that the trial was illegal.

Second arrest

On April 28, 2013, Gaskarov was arrested as a suspect in the Bolotnaya case . The Bolotnaya case is a series of trials that were initiated after the rioting on May 6, 2012 in Bolotnaya Square in Moscow . At that time tens of thousands took to the streets in the wake of the protests after the Duma and presidential elections 2011/2012 to demonstrate against election manipulation and the inauguration of Vladimir Putin into the office of president. Like most of the figurants in the Bolotnaya case, Gaskarow is accused of participating in mass riots (Art. 212 Paragraph 2 StGB RF) and using force against state representatives (Art. 318 Paragraph 1 StGB RF). The Bolotnaya trials are described by human rights organizations and political observers as politically motivated.

Actions in support of Alexei Gaskarow took place both in Russia and abroad, including in Helsinki , Paris , New York , Winnitza , Lemberg , Hamburg , Milan , Kiev , Warsaw .

On May 11, 2013, a bicycle parade was held in Moscow in support of Gaskarow and the other suspects in the Bolotnaya case. On May 27, another one took place in St. Petersburg .

On June 18, 2013, a celebratory event was held in the Sakharov Center on the occasion of the birthday of Alexei Gaskarow, who, however, had to spend his 28th birthday in custody.

Further protests took place in several Russian cities between June 17 and 23.

In addition, more than 500 residents of Zhukovsky signed a petition in support of him. More than three thousand people signed such a petition on the Internet.

At the international level Gaskarow is supported by the martial artist Jeff Monson , among others . His video message has been viewed more than 50,000 times to date.
