Alexis Janin

Alexis Janin (* 1846 in New Orleans , † January 13, 1897 in San Francisco ) was an American mining engineer and metallurgist .

Life

Alexis Janin was the son of a US diplomat who worked at the American embassy in Paris. After completing his first degree at the Sorbonne , he went to Germany to study metallurgy and from 1865 studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg . In 1866 he became a member of the Corps Montania Freiberg . In the same year he received eight days of simple prison sentence because of the nocturnal noise.

After completing his studies, Janin returned to the USA, where he initially worked for Comstock Mines and developed a process for the treatment and recycling of smelter residues. He then took over the management of the Meadow Valley Mill in Builionville, Nevada . He made numerous trips to mining camps in the USA, Mexico and South America to acquire mines . His special skills were the reliable start of mining work in newly opened mines and the determination of the optimal process for the preparation and processing of the ores obtained . For many years until his death, Janin conducted metallurgical studies at his San Francisco headquarters.

He died unmarried in his brother's house in San Francisco. He was cremated and his ashes were buried in the family vault in New Orleans.

Janin was one of the most renowned mining experts in the United States.
