Alf Black

Alf Schwarz (born May 22, 1935 in Biberach an der Riss , German Empire ; † August 3, 2015 in Natal , Brazil ) was a Canadian sociologist and Africa researcher , known for his work on social upheavals in post-colonial Sub-Saharan Africa .

Life

After studying at the Sorbonne (Paris) with Georges Gurvitch , Raymond Aron , Pierre Bourdieu , Roger Bastide , Claude Lévi-Strauss , Georges Balandier and a research assignment at the University of Dakar (today University of Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal), he began he started his academic career in 1963 as a research fellow at the Institute for Economic and Social Research at Lovanium University ( Kinshasa , RDC). When he was appointed professor of sociology, he moved to Laval University (Québec) in 1966 , where he set up one of the first programs for African studies in Canada . As one of the pioneers of African studies in Canada, he played a key role in founding the Canadian Association of African Studies / Association canadienne des études africaines. Between 1974 and 1982 he directed the Canadian Journal of African Studies / Revue canadienne des études africaines on behalf of this association of Canadian Africanists. In 1998, Professor Alf Schwarz left his UNESCO / Laval chair for sustainable development and took his leave after 33 years at the University of Laval.

Awards

Professor Alf Schwarz was an honorary doctorate from the University of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte - UERN, Mossoró, Brazil) and an honorary member of the Fundação José Augusto (Natal, Brazil).
