Alfonso Merry del Val y Zulueta

Alfonso Merry del Val y Zulueta (born April 20, 1864 in London , † May 27, 1943 in San Sebastián ) was a Spanish diplomat and from 1913 to 1931 ambassador to King Alfonso XIII. with Georg V.

Life

His mother was Sofia Josefa de Zulueta († 1925), the daughter of Pedro José de Zulueta and his father was Marquis Rafael Merry del Val . His brothers were Pedro, Rafael Merry del Val and Domingo Merry del Val y Zulueta . He entered the diplomatic service in 1882 and was employed in the Spanish embassies in Brussels, Rome and Vienna.

On June 24, 1897, he was a guest at Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee at Buckingham Palace , where a photograph was taken. On October 17, 1901 he married María de Alzola y González de Castejón (born January 31, 1879). 1908 Alfonso Merry del Val y Zulueta was sent to the embassy in Tangier . Five years later, in 1913, he became Ambassador to the Court of St James’s .

After the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, Merry demanded recognition of the Irish government by the Spanish government. At the same time Alfonso Merry del Val y Zulueta became ambassador to London and Alfons XIII. let the Spanish state pay for its expenses. In 1927 the book Alfonso XIII Unmasked: The Military Terror in Spain by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez was put on the index in Spain. Merry gave an interview to Time Magazine and argued with the pacification of the Rif, which was carried out with mustard gas .

On May 31, 1931, Alfonso Merry del Val y Zulueta was retired. After the coup led by Francisco Franco's generals, Merry produced propaganda for the coup plotters in London.
