Alfred Abraham Gerngroß (born December 31, 1844 in Forth (Eckental) , † January 7, 1908 in Vienna ) was a German- Austrian merchant and department store owner .

biography

Gerngroß came to Vienna via Frankfurt and began his ascent in 1881 with a shop on Kirchengasse in the Neubau district . In competition with and in the immediate vicinity of his temporary employer August Herzmansky , Gerngroß succeeded in building Vienna's largest department store in several stages. Two of his four sons became shareholders in the company during his lifetime. The Gerngross department store was subsequently converted into a stock corporation on December 22, 1911 . Alfred Gerngroß left a fortune of around 4 million gold crowns . On the occasion of his death, the social democratic Arbeiter-Zeitung emphasized the entrepreneur's socio-political openness in an article on January 8, 1908. He was buried in the old Jewish cemetery of the Vienna Central Cemetery .
