Alfred Begas (born January 20, 1866 in Berlin , † April 7, 1938 in Kiel ) was a German naval officer . In 1917 he was given the character of a Vice Admiral .

Life

Begas was the grandson of the painter Carl Joseph Begas and son of the painter Oscar Begas ; three of his uncles were also artists.

From April 1905 to May 1907 Corvette Captain Begas was under the command of the SMS Condor , a small cruiser.

From September 1908 to September 1910, Begas commanded the liner SMS Wittelsbach , initially with the rank of frigate captain , then as sea ​​captain .

Begas was the skipper of the imperial yacht SMY Meteor IV .

In the First World War he was first until January 23, 1915 2nd Admiral of the 5th Squadron, a reserve squadron for coastal protection, with the command on the SMS Kaiser Friedrich III. and then from January 24, 1915 to January 15, 1916 squadron commander of the fifth squadron with the rank of sea captain. Begas was involved in the Imperial Yacht Club in Kiel, also as chairman. In this function he successfully applied for the dissolution of the club in 1936 in order to avoid being brought into line with the Yacht Club of Germany . At the beginning of the 1930s he sailed with Hans Domizlaff on his Yawl Dirk III to Norway , the Shetland and the Faroe Islands .
