(Célestin) Alfred Cogniaux (born April 7, 1841 in Robechies , Belgium, † April 15, 1916 in Genappe ) was a Belgian botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Cogn. "

Live and act

He was a lecturer and curator at the Botanical Garden in Brussels from 1872-1880. Later (1880–1901) he was a professor of natural history a. a. in Verviers ; he was also Vice Consul for Brazil. His main research areas were orchids , cucurbits and black- mouthed plants . In 1916 his extensive herbarium came into the possession of the national Belgian botanical garden ( Nationale Plantentuin van België - Jardin botanique national de Belgique ).

Honor taxon

Henri Ernest Baillon named the pumpkin genus Cogniauxia in his honor and Rudolf Schlechter named the orchid genus Neocogniauxia after him. Otto Kuntze called the mushroom genus of biscogniauxia Biscogniauxia after him. The species Gurania cogniauxiana from the pumpkin family is also named after him.
