Alfred Fisher

Alfred Joel Fisher (born June 30, 1942 in Boston , † December 14, 2016 in Kingston ) was a Canadian composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Fisher studied piano with Alfred Kanwischer and Pierre Luboshutz , composition with George Crumb , Douglas Moore , John Pozdro and H. Owen Reed and musicology with Hans Nathan . From 1965 to 1968 he taught at Michigan State University , from 1969 to 1972 at the University of Western Ontario , 1972/73 at the University of Saskatchewan and from 1973 to 1978 at Acadia University . Since 1978 he has been a professor at the University of Alberta . He became a Canadian citizen in 1974.

Fisher is the founder and director of the ensemble for new improvisational music PING at the University of Alberta , where he is also active as a piano accompanist and conductor. In 1989 he appeared as a soloist with Johann Sebastian Bach's Piano Concerto in F minor. His compositions have been performed on the CBC radio, among others .

He died on December 14, 2016 at Kingston General Hospital in Kingston .
