Alfred George Edwards (born November 2, 1848 in Llanymawddwy , Gwynedd , Wales , † July 22, 1937 ) was an Anglican bishop and primate of the Church in Wales .

Edwards was born in November 1848 to William Edwards and his wife Louisa. After the Welsh Educational Institution in Llandovery attended for a year and received private tuition, enrolled Edwards in January 1870 at the Jesus College of the University of Oxford . In 1874 he received his Honors degree . Edwards received his Master of Arts in 1876. Since 1875 he was Warden (director) of Llandovery College .

In 1874 Edwards was ordained a deacon . A year later he was ordained a priest. In 1885 he was transferred to the rectory of St. Peter in Carmarthen . He also became the private secretary of William Basil Jones , Bishop of St. Davids, that same year . In February 1889, Edwards was nominated Bishop of St Asaph. His episcopal ordination took place on March 25th in Westminster Abbey . Edwards was a strong opponent of the separation from the Church of England and the independence of the Church in Wales. When this came about in 1920 as a result of the Welsh Church Act of 1914, he was enthroned on June 1, 1920 in St Asaph Cathedral as the first Archbishop of Wales and was thus primate of the now independent Church in Wales . In June 1934 he resigned from his bishopric.

Edwards was married to Caroline Edwards († 1884) since 1875. From this marriage two sons and three daughters were born. In 1886 he married again, this time Mary Laidley († 1912), and had two other children, a son and a daughter. In 1917 Edwards finally went to Margaret Armistead († after 1937) his third marriage. Edwards died on July 22, 1937 and was buried in St Asaph , Denbighshire .
