Alfred Gottwald

Alfred Gottwald (born June 11, 1893 in Tarnau , Silesia , † December 7, 1971 in Hille , Minden district ) was a German expressionist church painter of the 20th century.

Life

Alfred Gottwald studied at the art academy in Breslau , graduated in 1915 with the drawing teacher exam and then attended the figure painting class of Eduard Kaempffer at the art academy .

Gottwald designed mosaics in Trier Cathedral and in St. Lutwinus in Mettlach . He also created important works abroad; for example in the Swedish cities of Norrköping and Örebro and in St. Bonifaz in Geneva . In many parish churches there are restored works by the artist. These include St. Martin in Rehlingen-Siersburg , St. Stephanus , in the All Saints Church in Wadern , in the Sacred Heart Church in Hille and in the Guardian Angel Church in Heimbach .

As a book illustrator, whose canon tables were often to be found on altars, he created the pictorial decorations for a Missale Romanum (missal) and a Missale Defunctorum (death book) in the 1930s .

He found his final resting place next to his sister in the Hille cemetery.
