Tarnau ( Polish Tarnów Opolski ) is a village in Upper Silesia in the Powiat Opolski of the Opole Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the rural community of the same name with about 9600 inhabitants. This has been bilingual since 2007 (Polish and German).

Geographical location
Tarnau is located 20 kilometers southeast of the district town and voivodeship capital Opole ( Opole ). The railway line between Opole and Gliwice runs through the village .

history
Tarnau was first mentioned in a document on October 9, 1293.
In the referendum on March 20, 1921, 355 eligible voters voted to remain with Germany and 532 for Poland. The majority of the entire constituency of Opole voted for Germany, which is why Tarnau remained with the German Empire. Until 1945 Tarnau was in the district of Opole .
In 1945 the previously German town came to Poland and was renamed Tarnów Opolski . In 1950 the place came to the Opole Voivodeship . In 1999 the place came to Powiat Opolski . Since only a part of the German residents were expelled after the Second World War, a large part of the population is of German descent today. According to the last Polish census of 2002, 24.34% of the community population belong to the German minority , another 10.87% describe themselves as "Silesians". That is why the community has been officially bilingual since February 15, 2007 and was able to introduce German place names on April 14, 2008.

- The Roman Catholic St. Martin's Church was built between 1913 and 1916 and consecrated on May 16, 1916.
