Alfred Hofstetter (born April 28, 1869 in Gais ; † September 22, 1955 there , reformed , resident in Gais) was a Swiss politician (FDP) .

Life

Alfred Hofstetter was born on April 28, 1869 in Gais as the son of a partner in a yarn trading company, Cantonal and Government Councilor Johannes Hofstetter (* 1832, † 1908) and Katharina nee Koller. Hofstetter, who attended the Trogen Cantonal School , passed his Matura in Zurich in 1888 . Immediately afterwards he devoted himself to studying law at the universities of Zurich , Berlin , Lausanne and Bern , which he achieved in 1894 with the academic degree of Dr. iur. completed.

As a result, Hofstetter headed a law firm in Gais from 1894. He also worked as a legal advisor in banking. In addition, he took on board mandates from 1917 for the St. Galler Hypothekarkasse, from 1914 to 1931 for the St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG and from 1920 to 1946 for the St. Gallen-Gais-Appenzell (SGA) electric tram . In addition, from 1920 to 1931 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the embroidery company Sonderegger & Co. in Herisau .

Alfred Hofstetter, father of the liberal politician and lawyer Alfred Hofstetter junior , married Frida in 1896, the daughter of the Urnäsch textile manufacturer, chief judge and cantonal councilor Johann Ulrich Aerne, and in 1922 Marie, the daughter of the farmer Ulrich Freund. He died on September 22, 1955, five months after he had turned 86 in Gais.

Political career

Hofstetter, a member of the Free Democratic Party, began his political career in 1894 in the municipal council of Gais, where he was initially represented by the 1898th Later, he served from 1901 to 1907 as a community captain . At the cantonal level, he sat on the Ausserrhoder Cantonal Council from 1900 to 1910 and from 1921 to 1934 , which he chaired several times . In between, Hofstetter was a member of the Ausserrhoder government council from 1910 to 1919 as head of the education, community and justice department. In addition, he was a member of the National Council for the canton from 1921 to 1931 .

Alfred Hofstetter spoke out firmly against an exaggerated spending policy by the federal government.
