Alfred Hofstetter baptismal name: Rudolf Albert (born September 18, 1898 in Gais ; † April 9, 1976 in Herisau , reformed , resident in Gais) was a Swiss politician (FDP) .

Life

Alfred Hofstetter was born on September 18, 1898 in Gais as the son of the lawyer and member of the National Council Alfred Hofstetter senior and Frida née Aerne. Hofstetter, a graduate of the Trogen Cantonal School , devoted himself to studying law at the University of Bern , which he completed with the academic degree of Dr. iur. completed.

As a result, he was employed as a lawyer in his father's law office in Gais. In addition, he was one of the co-founders of the Wasserauen-Ebenalp cable car as its president until 1974. He took on board mandates for the Northeast Swiss and from 1942 to 1957 the St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG and from 1954 the "JG Nef & Co." in Herisau. Hofstetter also served as chairman of the board of directors of Altstätten-Gais-Bahn (AG) from 1939 to 1947 , and of St. Gallen-Gais-Appenzell-Altstätten-Bahn (SGA) from 1954 to 1972 , of which he was interim director from 1956 to 1970 1952 of the Höhener twisting mill in Gais and from 1954 to 1969 of Prof. Buser's pre-alpine daughter institute in Teufen , which was run by his wife between 1952 and 1966.

Alfred Hofstetter married Helen Berlet in 1930, the daughter of Hermann Mauff and widow of Karl Willi Hochmuth. He died on April 9, 1976 at the age of 78 in Herisau.

Political offices

Alfred Hofstetter's political career, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, began in 1932 when he was elected to the Gais municipal council , to which he was a member until 1940, from 1937 onwards as mayor . At the cantonal level, he was a member of the Ausserrhoder Cantonal Council from 1934 to 1940, 1951 and 1954 , which he chaired from 1938 to 1940 . In between, Hofstetter was represented on the government council from 1940 to 1951 as head of the judiciary and police department . In addition, he headed the government from 1942 to 1945 as Landammann .
