Alfred "Freddie" Micallef (born March 18, 1939 in Mosta ; † April 7, 2011 ) was a Maltese politician of the Partit Laburista (PL) who was a member of the House of Representatives between 1962 and 1996 and was a minister several times.

Life

Micallef, who joined the Partit Laburista as a member in 1959, became a member of the National Executive of the PL as early as 1960. At the same time he acted between 1963 and 1966 as president of the Għaqda Żgħażagħ Laburisti (GZL), the youth organization of the trade union federation. He was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in the elections on March 26 and 28, 1966, and was a member of the House until October 26, 1996.

Micallef took over his first government office on June 21, 1971 when Prime Minister Dom Mintoff appointed him Parliamentary Secretary for Trade, Industry, Tourism, Agriculture and Fisheries in his second cabinet . In the course of a government reshuffle in September 1974 he took over the role of Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries ( Ministru tal-Agrikoltura u s-Sajd ) from Paul Xuereb , who from then on was only Minister for Trade, Industry and Tourism.

After the formation of the third Mintoff cabinet on September 25, 1976, he became Minister for Semi-State Industries ( Ministru tal-Industrija Parastatali ), before he was again Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries in December 1978 after a new government reshuffle . He also held this office in the fourth Mintoff cabinet from December 20, 1981 to September 3, 1983 . He then held the post of Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Services ( Ministru tax-Xogħol u Servizzi Soċjali ) in the fifth Mintoff cabinet and the Mifsud Bonniċi cabinet between September 3, 1983 and May 12, 1987 .

After leaving the House of Representatives, Micallef became CEO of Medigrain in 1997 . In addition, he was active as chairman of the Maltese Cycling Federation and the Maltese Pigeon Breeding Club ( Malta Pigeon Club ). For his many years of service, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the National Order of Merit (UOM) on December 13, 1997 . From his marriage to Maria Concetta, the children Carlo, Dino and Maria emerged.
