Alfred Neumann (full name Alfred Richard Neumann , born May 18, 1905 in Pilsen , † December 4, 1988 in Vienna ) was an Austrian provincial Roman archaeologist .

Life

Alfred Neumann studied archeology , geography , history and classical philology at the University of Vienna from 1924 to 1929 , where he was primarily influenced by Wilhelm Kubitschek . Neumann was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . From 1930 he worked as an assistant at the Museum Carnuntinum in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg . From 1934 to 1937 he was an archaeological consultant for the scientific press service of the City of Vienna. In 1939 Neumann became a research assistant at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz .

After the Second World War , Neumann was appointed head of the Roman Museum in Vienna in 1946 and in 1948 head of the Prehistory and Protohistory Department of the Historical Museum of the City of Vienna . He was also the head of the archaeological excavations in the Vienna city area. Neumann has received numerous honors for his scientific merits: he was a member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (since 1948) and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (since 1953); In 1965 the Federal President awarded him the title of professor; In 1967 he received the Dr. Adolf Schärf Fund for the Advancement of Science . In 1973 Neumann retired. After his death on December 4, 1988, he was buried on December 13, 1988 in the Vienna Central Cemetery.

Neumann's research focus was the history of settlements in the Vienna area. He has published numerous books, articles, catalogs and encyclopedias, among others for Paulys Realenzyklopädie der classical antiquity (RE) and for the little Pauly . His publications on various excavations in the Vienna area are now partly out of date due to new discoveries. Together with Leonhard Franz, he published the lexicon of prehistoric and early historical sites in Austria in 1965 .
