Alfred Rainer (born September 22, 1987 in Saalfelden , † August 15, 2008 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian Nordic combined athlete .

He lived in Maria Alm , where his uncle introduced him to Nordic skiing at a young age. His career as a Nordic combined athlete began in 1998 at the Nordic Ski School in Saalfelden . After completing secondary school, he continued on to the Nordic Training Center in Eisenerz . There he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter, which he completed in June 2007 with excellent results. Since then, Alfred Rainer has trained at the Army Training Center in Salzburg (Rif).

Sporting successes

After winning a silver medal with the team at the Junior World Championships in 2006, the Salzburg native recorded his greatest success a year later at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 2007 in Tarvisio . With a gold medal in the team and two bronze medals in individual and sprint competitions, he finished the world championships as the most successful athlete. With his first victory in the B World Cup in Klingenthal and further top placements, Alfred Rainer qualified for the A World Cup for the first time in January 2007. In his first appearance in the A World Cup in Zakopane , he achieved an 11th and 20th place as a debutant. At the 2007 Summer Grand Prix in Klingenthal, he was able to place 3rd on the podium in the A World Cup for the first time. In the 2006/07 season , the athlete starting for SC Saalfelden placed 36th in the overall World Cup. The following year, in the 2007/08 season , Rainer started his first full season in the World Cup. With numerous top 15 placements and a top 10 placement, he was able to finish his first World Cup season in 24th overall.

On August 6, 2008, Alfred Rainer had a serious accident while paragliding in his home town of Maria Alm . The 20-year-old from Salzburg fell during a flight from a height of around 20 meters and suffered a craniocerebral trauma, a contusion of the lungs and a fracture of the femur and heel bone. He was kept in an artificial deep sleep on the trauma station in Innsbruck. He died on August 15, 2008 as a result of the accident.
