Alfred Wallace Roome (born December 22, 1908 in London , United Kingdom , † November 19, 1997 in Gerrards Cross , United Kingdom) was a British film editor who also appeared twice as a film director .

Live and act

Roome's father worked in a managerial position at the Daily Mirror and was less than enthusiastic when his son Alfred told him that he wanted to go into the film business. Roome Jr. started in the props department at Elstree Studios in 1927 and got to know the industry from the bottom up. The following year, director and producer Herbert Wilcox fulfilled Roome's wish to become editor and brought him to the editing department as an assistant . Another year later, Roome was behind the camera as an assistant on Alfred Hitchcock 's first sound film, Blackmail . In the same year, Alfred Roome met actress Janice Adair (1905-1996), with whom he was married until her death in 1996. Since 1933, Alfred Roome worked regularly in the editing departments of British production companies, starting with Gaumont British.

His early work was cheaply made comedies; for more expensive productions such as A Lady disappears , Kipps and The Young Mr. Pitt , he remained subordinate to his more experienced professional colleague RE Dearing. At the same time, during the Second World War , he worked for the British Ministry of Information and edited short propaganda documentaries. In 1944 Roome returned to the cinema and initially worked for Gainsborough Studios. In 1948 Gainsborough's Roome was also employed twice as a director (the comedy “It's Not Cricket” and the crime drama “My Brother's Keeper”) as well as a producer and production manager. After this work received little response, Alfred Roome concentrated entirely on film editing again in the early 1950s. In the following quarter of a century, he mainly assembled productions by Ken Annakin in the 1950s and the comedies by the brothers Ralph and Gerald Thomas in the 1960s and 1970s . For the latter, he edited all works of the Carry-On film series from 1967 to 1975 . Roome then retired.
