He has just had his last wife executed when Henry VIII of England wants to marry again - not least for the sake of public finances. The chosen one, Marie of Normandy , a relative of the French King Francis I , is already there. But then there are problems because Heinrich is not able to consummate the marriage. The aphrodisiac that has brought his bride from her home, Henry does not get at all: garlic . So Henry asked his two most important men, Lord Seal Keeper Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex and Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Wolsey , to put this thing right. Since Sir Roger de Lodgerley did not let himself be put off by the garlic, the Queen was soon in different circumstances. Of course, Heinrich plays that into the cards. Especially since he fell in love with the sexy girl Bettina. After many problems and bribes, the Pope's permission for a divorce was bought. But now the French king is threatening a war - which England could neither finance nor win. Of course, various entanglements have to be survived until the end.

Heinrich's bed stories or How Garlic Came to England parodies historical material once again. In the US , the film was awarded under the title Carry On Henry VIII . The production title was Anne of a Thousand Lays , based on the film Queen for a Thousand Days . There played Richard Burton (Henry VIII), Geneviève Bujold ( Anne Boleyn ), Irene Papas ( Catherine of Aragon ), Anthony Quayle (Cardinal Wolsey) and John Colicos (Thomas Cromwell). Sid James even wore the same coat that Burton wore in the role. This did not happen for the first time here, but in Is Yes Crazy - Caesar loves Cleopatra , he wears the old costumes of Burton, there from the film Cleopatra .

As usual, screenwriter Talbot Rothwell skilfully throws various set pieces from the story together, whether they fit or not. This is how Cromwell and Wolsey act together, even though they have separated in office. Heinrich never married a Marie from Normandy either.
