The Mainkreis (also Main-Kreis or District Wiesbaden ) was a district in the administrative district of Wiesbaden in the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau and existed from February 22, 1867 to March 31, 1886. The district area was on the right bank of the Lower Main in today's territories of the cities of Frankfurt am Main and Wiesbaden as well as that of the Main-Taunus district in between .

history

After the occupation of the Duchy of Nassau by Prussia during the German War (July 1866 , annexation was announced on August 4 ), the new administrative district (consisting of Nassau and the Free City of Frankfurt, which was also incorporated, along with some Hesse-Darmstadt areas) was divided into 12 districts . The previous Nassau offices of Wiesbaden , Hochheim , Höchst and the previously Hessian office of Rödelheim formed the Mainkreis. The district office was located in Wiesbaden , although the city itself did not belong to the district.

During the existence of the district, the western Rhine-Main area experienced significant changes. Started with the integration of the region into the Prussian state association and the elimination of the state and customs borders between Nassau and Frankfurt (e.g. the repeal of the Höchst Mainzoll on December 31, 1866), the founding of the Empire in 1871, via the intensifying industrialization (expansion around 1863 founded Hoechst ) until the construction (of railroads opening of the Main-Lahn railway of Limburg to Frankfurt 1877) and for channeling the lower Main for modern shipping.

On April 1, 1886, the new district regulations for the province of Hesse-Nassau came into force. New, smaller counties were created. The Mainkreis was also divided:

• The former offices of Hochheim and Wiesbaden formed the new district of Wiesbaden ,
• the former offices of Höchst and Rödelheim formed the new district of Höchst .

The municipalities of Langenhain , Lorsbach and Marxheim , which belonged to the Hochheim office , were transferred to the Höchst district, while the Heddernheim municipality, which previously belonged to the Höchst district, and the town of Rödelheim to the Frankfurt district .
