Alfred Wiedensohler (born April 13, 1955 in Jülich ) is a German physicist . He became internationally known for his work in aerosol research .

Career

Alfred Wiedensohler studied electrical engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 1976 to 1983 . In June 1989, Wiedensohler received his doctorate in this very subject. In the same year he joined the Department of Nuclear Physics at Lund University as a researcher and later as assistant professor , where he worked until 1993. Alfred Wiedensohler reported about this time: “I had a wonderful and successful time in Lund. I am very grateful especially to Hans-Christen Hansson, who supported me all the time. "(" I had a wonderful and successful time in Lund. I am especially grateful to Hans-Christian Hansson, who supported me over the entire period. ")

In 1994 he began his work at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research . In this he works as a department head for the aerosol group. Since January 1996 he has been a private lecturer and since May 2005 an extraordinary professorship at the Institute for Meteorology, Faculty of Physics and Geosciences at the University of Leipzig .

In December 2004, Wiedensohler received a three-year visiting professorship at the "College of Environmental Science and Technology" at Beijing University . Since October 2018 he has been adjunct professor in the "Department of Environmental Science and Engineering" at Fudan University Shanghai and since January 2020 adjunct professor at the "Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology" at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, in Quezon City, Metro Manila.

Alfred Wiedensohler heads the World Calibration Center for Aerosol Physics (WCCAP) of the WMO (World Organization for Meteorology) and the European Center for Aerosol Calibration (ECAC) within the framework of ACTRIS (a European research infrastructure for aerosol, clouds and trace gases). From 2013 to 2018 he was also editor-in-chief of the journal "Atmospheric Environment".

In 2014 Alfred Wiedensohler received the Hagen Smit Prize from the journal "Atmospheric Environment". He received the "Highly Cited Researcher" award from Thomson Reuters from 2014 to 2017. In July 2020, Alfred Wiedensohler's H-Index was 75. He is currently the author and co-author of 408 scientific publications in the field of aerosol and natural sciences. His research focuses on the physical characterization and climatology of atmospheric aerosols and the development of new scientific aerosol instruments.

Volunteering & committees

Alfred Wiedensohler works as an honorary judge at the Social Court in Leipzig .

Since 1997 he has been a member of the "Scientific Advisory Group for Aerosols" within the framework of the Global Atmosphere Watch.
