Alfred Wilhelm Baedeker (born June 19, 1888 in Essen ; † August 5, 1937 there ) was a German publisher and bookseller. In 1922 he was the sole owner of GD Baedeker Verlag .

Life

Born as the son of the bookseller Diedrich Gottschalk Baedeker , he graduated from the secondary school in Hildesheim . This was followed by an apprenticeship in banking in Stuttgart , as well as studying law from 1910 at the universities in Berlin , Göttingen , Greifswald , Munich and Münster (Westphalia) . In 1913 Baedeker took the legal traineeship exam in Hamm .

At the beginning of the First World War he became a war volunteer in 1914 and two years later a lieutenant in the reserve in Schleswig-Holstein's 9th foot artillery regiment . After the end of the war in 1918, he resumed his traineeship.

On August 2, 1922, Alfred Baedeker became the sole owner of GD Baedeker Verlag in Essen, succeeding his father . He was the editor of the yearbook for the Dortmund Upper Mining District until the Association for Mining Interests in the Dortmund Upper Mining District took over the publication. The yearbook was founded by Victor Weidtman and continued by his father Diedrich Baedeker.

In 1925 Baedeker married Marta geb. Preuschel , who had completed her training at Baedekerverlag and later joined the management team. Alfred Baedeker was instrumental in furnishing the Baedekerhaus , which was built in 1928 in downtown Essen and is now a listed building. Due to high investments in the bookstore, the business almost went bankrupt, after which his wife took over the management in full. In 1933, Baedeker retired from active business for health reasons. In addition, since he was half-Jewish, he was increasingly exposed to the discrimination of the National Socialists .

Baedeker died as a result of a fall. His grave is in the Ostfriedhof in Essen .
