Religious activity

According to Ian Johnson, author of The Fourth Mosque , Himmat belongs to the Egyptian part of the Muslim Brotherhood . From 1973 to 2002 he headed the Islamic Community in Germany .

Himmat was the managing director and one of the founders of al-Taqwa, which was founded in 1988. Al-Taqwa was based in Lugano and was accused of supporting Al-Qaeda. A former shareholder of Al-Taqwa was Ibrahim El-Zayat , his successor as chairman of the Islamic Community in Germany.

In 2005, the Swiss Federal Prosecutor's Office closed the criminal proceedings against Youssef Nada and Ghaleb Himmat, those responsible for Nada / Al-Taqwa, on suspicion of involvement and / or support for a criminal organization. Ahmed Huber , who belongs to the right-wing scene, sat on the board of directors of al-Taqwa.

In April 2008, Himmat was sentenced in absentia to ten years in prison in an Egyptian military tribunal for membership and support of a banned organization and money laundering.
