Alice Louise Walton (born October 7, 1949 in Newport, Arkansas ) is an American entrepreneur and billionaire. With a net worth of $ 55.6 billion as of April 2020, she is the 9th richest person and the richest woman in the world.

Life

The youngest daughter of the late Walmart founder Sam Walton and his wife Helen Robson Walton inherited her fortune in 1992 after the death of her father, as did her brothers S. Robson Walton , Jim Walton and John T. Walton . She is a shareholder in the Walmart group and owns 10%.

Walton grew up in Bentonville, Arkansas . In 1971 she graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and finance.

Her brother John T. Walton died in a plane crash in 2005 at the age of 58, leaving behind his wife Christy Walton and son Lukas Walton - Alice Walton's sister-in-law and nephew. Her mother Helen Robson Walton died in 2007 at the age of 87. She is also the cousin of Ann Walton Kroenke and Nancy Walton Laurie , who also own shares in the Walmart group.

Walton has been involved in three car accidents. In 1983, near Acapulco, Mexico , she lost control of a rented vehicle and fell into a ravine, leaving her with severe leg injuries. After more than two dozen operations, she still suffers from the consequences today. In April 1989, her car hit 50-year-old Oleta Hardin who was crossing the street. She then died, but no charges were brought against Walton. In 1998, her car collided with a gas pump while under the influence of alcohol. She was fined $ 925.

Walton hit the headlines when she drove again under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on October 7, 2011, her 62nd birthday, in Weatherford, Texas . Her lawyer released a statement in which Walton accepted full responsibility and expressed regret for the incident. The charges were then withdrawn in September 2013.

Walton is twice divorced and is now unmarried.

Between 1998 and 2015, she lived on a ranch in Millsap, Texas and raised horses there. She currently resides primarily in Fort Worth, Texas .

Career

Unlike her brothers, Walton did not take on a leading role in the Walmart group. In her early career, she worked as an equity analyst for First Commerce Corporation and as the director of investment activities for Arvest Bank Group. She was also a stockbroker at EF Hutton. In 1988 she founded the Llama Company, an investment bank she ran herself, which was closed again in 1998. She also headed the Northwest Arkansas Council and played an important role in the construction of the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, which opened in 1998 .

art

Today, Walton appears primarily through her activities in connection with the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, which she opened in 2011. She is an art collector, the international art magazine ARTNews ranks her among the 200 most important in the world. Her private collection is valued at approximately $ 500 million. She owns works by American artists such as Andy Warhol , Norman Rockwell and Georgia O'Keeffe , among others . Her collection is on display at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

politics

Despite coming from a Republican family, Walton donated $ 353,400 in 2016 to the Hillary Victory Fund, which supports Democrats like Hillary Clinton . Walton and Clinton met during Clinton's tenure as Arkansas First Lady and a member of the Walmart Board of Directors.
