Alice von Hildebrand

Alice von Hildebrand , née Alice Jourdain (March 11, 1923 in Brussels , Belgium ; † January 14, 2022 in New Rochelle , New York ) was a Catholic philosopher and theologian .

Life

Alice Jourdain came to New York City in 1940 as a war refugee . She met the philosopher and theologian Dietrich von Hildebrand at the Jesuit College Fordham University in New York and studied philosophy at Fordham University. She later became Dietrich von Hildebrand's assistant, and wife from 1959, and collaborated with him on some of his books.

From 1947 she taught at Hunter College in New York City and was a professor of philosophy for 37 years until 1984. After that she was engaged as a speaker in South America, Canada, in thirty-five US states and many European countries. In addition to her many years of service at Hunter College, she has also taught at several other institutions, including the Catechetical Institute in Dunwoody, NY, at the Franciscan University of Steubenville (where she was a member of the Board of Trustees for many years), at Thomas More College in Rome , at Ave Maria College in Michigan and at Notre Dame Institute in Arlington, VA (now Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College).

Alice von Hildebrand worked as an editor and writer. Her works include: The Privilege of Being a Woman (2002) and The Soul of a Lion: The Life of Dietrich von Hildebrand (2000), a biography of her late husband. She has published numerous articles that have appeared in journals and magazines such as The New Oxford Review, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, Crisis Magazine and This Rock. She has also worked for the Catholic News Agency and EWTN television .

In 2004, together with several of her husband's students, she founded the Dietrich von Hildebrand Legacy Project (www.hildebrandlegacy.org) to ensure the long-term promotion and dissemination of her husband's life and thought. The Hildebrand project has the personal support of Pope Benedict XVI. as well as a number of philosophical and theological scholars, politicians and philanthropists.
