The allackberry ( Rubus arcticus ), also called (Swedish) fieldberry , arctic blackberry or arctic raspberry , is a species of the genus Rubus .

description

The thornless perennial plant is about 10 to 30 cm high. The bright red to purple flowers are about 15 to 25 mm in size, the petals are sometimes serrated. The leaves are pinnate in three parts. In June and July, the field berries produce very tasty red fruits. It reproduces vegetatively via runners .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

distribution

The Allackberry occurs in northern Eurasia ( Finland , northern Sweden , northern Norway and northern Russia ) as well as in North America, China, Korea and Mongolia. In North America it is also known by the Indian name Nagoonberry. It prefers bogs with wet to moist peaty soils.

The allackberry is occasionally confused with the cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) , which occurs in the same habitat. The cloudberry can be easily distinguished from the allackberry by its almost always white flowers, its yellow-orange berries when ripe and its differently shaped leaves.

Subspecies and variants

  • Rubus arcticus subsp. stellatus ( Sm. ) B. Boivin : a subspecies primarily native to Alaska and northwest Canada; was formerly regarded as a separate species and as Rubus stellatus referred
  • Rubus arcticus subsp. acaulis ( Michx. ) Focke : a subspecies found in large parts of Canada; was formerly known as Rubus acaulis referred
  • Rubus × stellarcticus ( G.Larss. ) HEWeber , also Rubus arcticus var. Stellarcticus : a cultivated variant of the Swedish field berry that originated in Sweden and was bred from a cross with a North American subspecies ( subsp. Stellatus )
