Allameh Seyyed Mohammad-Hossein Tabatabai (also Alameh Tabataba'i ; Persian محمدحسین طباطبایی, DMG Muḥammad-Ḥosain Ṭabāṭabāyī ; * 1892 or 1903 in Tabriz ; † November 15, 1981 ) was one of the most influential Iranian Islamic philosophers of the last century and a Shiite cleric with the religious title Ayatollah .

He wrote numerous books on Islamic philosophy, his most important single work is a monumental commentary on the Koran under the title Tafsir al Mizan .

Many of his students such as B. Mohammad Beheschti , Morteza Motahhari or Mohammad Mofatteh played an important role in the Islamic revolution in Iran and later held important positions. He himself did not take an active part in the Iranian revolution. He found his final resting place in the prayer hall in the shrine of Fatima Masuma .

The Allameh-Tabataba'i University in Tehran is named after the philosopher.
