Allan Spear

Allan Henry Spear (born June 24, 1937 in Michigan City , Indiana , † October 11, 2008 in Minneapolis , Minnesota ) was an American politician .

Life

Spear attended Oberlin College and graduated from Yale University . He became a member of the Democratic Party and served in the Minnesota Senate from 1973 to 2008 . From January 1993 to January 2001 he served as President of the Senate. After his public coming out on November 9, 1974, Spear was one of the first elected representatives of the United States to live openly gay .

His longtime partner was Junjiro Tsuji, with whom he lived in Minneapolis.
