Allen Jones (* 1. September 1937 in Southampton ) is a British artist of Pop Art .

Life

Allen Jones' father was from Wales and tried to find work on the docks of Southampton during the economic crisis. When Allen Jones was three years old, the family moved to west London. Jones studied from 1955 to 1960 at Hornsey College of Art and at the Royal College of Art in London, where he was fellow student of RB Kitaj and David Hockney . From 1964 he lived in New York for two years . As a result, he took on numerous teaching positions at art colleges, including in Hamburg and Berlin . He was a participant in documenta III in Kassel in 1964 and also represented as an artist at the 4th documenta in 1968, where he presented Perfect Match .

In 1986 he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts . Allen Jones now lives in London .

Allen Jones is one of the most influential artists of British Pop Art thanks to his provocative work. He works both in painting and as a sculptor . His works often have a strong erotic reference. He addresses sexual preferences such as BDSM and sexual fetishism and emphasizes, satirizes or alienates them at the same time. Jones likes to quote phallic symbols in his works (e.g. ties as a sign of male potency) and counterpoint them with symbols of female eroticism (subjects of female legs in high-heeled shoes) and polarizes the viewer through his sculptures and sculptures.

Jones was best known at the end of the 1960s for his provocative, life-size and realistic-looking female figures made of steel and fiberglass, which function as pieces of furniture when tied up. The Hatstand, Table and Chair series of sculptures was created in 1969. Filmmaker Laura Mulvey wrote in an essay entitled You Don't Know What Is Happening, Do You Mr Jones? 'Allen Jones is a fetishist suffering from an unconscious castration complex .

Stanley Kubrick was inspired by these sculptures for the interior of the Korova milk bar in the film A Clockwork Orange . Jones was also by designing a bottle series for perfume series Les beaux arts in the form of high-heels known.
