Allen almond tree
Allen Mandelbaum (born May 14, 1926 in Albany / New York ; † October 27, 2011 in Winston-Salem / North Carolina ) was an American professor of Italian literature . Mandelbaum also published poems and worked as a translator.

His translation of Dante Alighieri's Divina Commedia appeared in the early 1980s. It was supported by the respected Dante expert Irma Brandeis . He then worked as chief editor of the California Lectura Dantis , a collection of essays on comedy that uses his translation.
Mandelbaum received the National Book Award for his translation of Virgils Aeneis and is also the recipient of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy, the Premio Mondello , the Premio Leonardo International (1995 as the first recipient of this award), the Premio Biella, the Premio LericiPea , the Premio Montale at the Montale anniversary in Rome, and the Circe Sabaudia Award.
